Who’s there?

Dear Blue,

The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is a play about division and solidarity.

It begins with a question: “Who’s there?”

‘Who’s there?’ is asked by a person pretending to be a person named Barnardo.

Barnardo is “a sentry.”  Barnardo is “a guard.”

We are “an audience.”

*

The person pretending to be Barnardo is an actor.  Shakespeare, who wrote the play, would have called the person pretending to be Barnardo “a player.”

*

As a sentry, Barnardo is on the lookout.  As a guard, Barnardo guards a castle.

For Barnardo it is the middle of the night.

For us it is just after the play Hamlet has begun.
